Adult writers turn over a new leaf
New Leaf Publishing is a not-for-profit project, set up to publish and promote writing by and for adult beginner readers and writers.
Not simply a publisher of ‘easy readers’, New Leaf is a unique organisation where the writer is at the centre of the work.
Co-Founder Anne Chester says, ‘We believe that the most interesting and stimulating material for basic skills students is that generated by themselves and other students. Students and tutors are involved in every stage of producing a New Leaf book.’ New Leaf develops projects and events to promote writing by adults with reading difficulties. Anne continues, ‘We start with the basic principle that everyone has something to say and our job is about enabling them to recognise what that is and provide the help needed to get it down on paper. We begin to do this by trying to take away some of the fear and failure carried over from school. So, no worries about spelling, handwriting or grammar to begin with. Just concentrating on how to get the words onto paper.’
