The first language of many Deaf people is British Sign Language (BSL); English is a second language.
BSL is a visual language in its own right and its grammar and structure are quite distinct from the structure of spoken and written English.
Since written English is based on spoken language, Deaf people experience difficulty learning English and consequently have much lower levels of literacy than their hearing peers.
New Leaf is delighted to be working in partnership with DeafEducate to increase the quantity and widen the range of reading material that will make the experience of Deaf adults working to improve their English literacy a positive one.
Our new range of e-Books are normal printed books written in English with accompanying eBooks on CD with BSL video translation.
